Arena Seminar 20192018-11-24T20:57:09+00:00

The Arena Seminar 2019

Friday 8th to 10th March 2019 at the Riviera Hotel, Burnaby Road, Alum Chine, Bournemouth, BH4 8JF

Arena is pleased to announce details of the 2019 Arena Seminar. The Seminar has become established as a major weekend event in the photographic calendar. The Seminar brings together a first-class group of speakers and photography enthusiasts for a weekend of lectures, discussion and the opportunity to share inspirational photography.

This year we are pleased to announce another excellent line-up of speakers: Janey Devine, Jeremy Walker, Jon Tonks, Hongbo Chen, Chris Roche and Vanessa Winship.

In addition to the lectures we will be running the hugely popular ‘Print Walk’ where guests can show their work to other delegates. The seminar will also feature the well-received ‘Arena Print Raffle’.

We are pleased to be returning to the Riviera Hotel in Bournemouth once more where we can look forward to the excellent service and facilities that we have enjoyed on previous seminars (the screen will be back in it’s usual position, so that all delegates can see.)

Seminar Speakers 2019

This year we are pleased to announce another excellent line-up of speakers: Janey Devine, Jeremy Walker, Jon Tonks, Hongbo Chen, Chris Roche and Vanessa Winship.

JANEY DEVINE

With a career in IT, Janey was an early convert to digital photography. Experimenting with a number of techniques she strived to produce impressions of the landscape and this led to a Fellowship of the RPS in 2008 with a panel taken in East Anglia. More recently she has been drawn to social documentary photography, and has worked on a number of projects. She was invited to join Arena in 2016 and is also a member of the Focus Group.

JEREMY WALKER

An award winning professional landscape photographer, Jeremy has been producing the highest quality landscape and architectural images for major advertising, editorial and design clients and agencies around the world for many years. He was recently appointed as Nikon UK’s new Landscape Ambassador. His images and articles regularly appear in the photographic and outdoor magazines.

JON TONKS

Following an MA in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography, Jon has been undertaking commissions for the likes of The Sunday Times, Guardian, Financial Times, Saturday Telegraph and TIME magazines. A long-term personal project has taken him to the remote British Overseas Territories in the South Atlantic, and has culminated in a touring exhibition and his first book ‘Empire’ published by Dewi Lewis.

HONGBO CHEN

Hongbo has been a tennis lover since childhood days, both as a player and spectator. As his interest in photography developed it was a natural progression for him to begin combining this with his passion for tennis, and this has led to an Associateship of the RPS. Attending many of the major tournaments in the UK and Europe, his images of the iconic moments and the informal and less obvious incidents in the sport are being marketed by Getty Images and agencies in his native China. Hongbo is a member of Arena.

CHRIS ROCHE

Chris is a storyteller who works both as a photographer and a filmmaker, and has an impressive list of major awards in both mediums. His work takes him to some of the most stunning parts of the world and has resulted in the publication of two books – ‘The Priests and Pilgrims of Ethiopia’ and Banaras, Holy City’. His current major project entitled ‘Devotion’ explores people’s thirst for spiritual fulfilment around the world.

VANESSA WINSHIP

Vanessa is one of the country’s leading reportage, documentary and portrait photographers, and her projects primarily focus on Eastern Europe, where she lived for several years, and America. She has exhibited widely in Europe and North America and her major solo exhibition ‘And Time Folds’ at the Barbican Art Gallery was undoubtedly a highlight of this year’s exhibition calendar. Among her awards, she was the winner of the highly prestigious Henri Cartier-Bresson Award in 2011.
